by Staff

2008 was a momentous year for the whole planet - a new American hero was feted across the globe, terrorrism reared its ugly head in India and the worst financial crisis for decades has engulfed the world.

There were also plenty of uplifting and bizarre stories too: History was made this year when Thomas Beatie (34) challenged the laws of nature and became the first man to give birth.

Other bizarre stories that have made the headlines this year include a German man renting out his girlfriend as a sex slave to his neighbour and the Australian who became a comic victim of technology when Google Earth published internet photographs of him passed out on a lawn.

2008 was also the year in which euthanasia was first shown on television: Professor Craig Ewert sparked controversy in December when he decided to be filmed for a documentary as his life support machine was switched off.

The billion dollar American election campaign was played out in front of a worldwide audience and included comic aspects - Sarah Palin's body double ‘porn film’ - as well as ominous – neo-Nazi threats against electoral candidate Barack Obama. Obama became the first African American President in American history on November 5.
