US Airways Crash (Photos, Video) Of Airbus A320 in Hudson River
by Staff

US Airways crash - There has been a crash of a US Airways jetliner into the cold waters of the Hudson River Thursday afternoon.

Birds reportedly struck the plane and disabled 2 engines.

The collision with the flock of birds sent more than 150 passengers and crew members scrambling onto rescue boats.

No deaths or serious injuries have been reported. All passengers and crew have gotten off the plane safely.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman told the AP that the flight had just taken off from New York's LaGuardia Airport on its way to Charlotte, North Carolina, when the crash occurred in the river near midtown Manhattan.

The plane would come to rest in the icy waters submerged up to the windows. Several boats surrounded the plane, which was slowly sinking.

Rescue crews were able to pull passengers in yellow life vests from the plane, as several boats surrounded the aircraft.

According to an eyewitness, the crash-landing in the river looked like a "controlled descent."

A passenger told the Reuters news service that there was what sounded like an explosion a few minutes after takeoff.

"The engine blew. There was fire everywhere and it smelled like gas," Jeff Kolodjay, from Norwalk, Connecticut, told Reuters on a midtown Manhattan quay. "People were bleeding all over. We hit the water pretty hard. It was scary."

Shares of US Airways Group reversed gains to fall more than 3 percent to $7.11 Thursday after the plane dropped into the Hudson River, on Manhattan's west side.

Before the news of the incident, the stock had been up more than 7 percent.

Government officials say there's no indication that the crash is related to terrorism.
