An Air France Airbus A330 - 200 that was flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris has gone missing over the Atlantic - and with it are 228 passengers onboard. (Scroll down for latest updates.)
The Air France Airbus 330, which reported turbulence and electrical problems in the moments before all contact and connection was cut off, has gone missing 130 miles off the coast of Brazil.
According to reports, 228 passengers and crew were onboard the plane, which was due to land today at 11:10 AM in Paris. Four hours into the flight, the pilot reported thunder storms and turbulence - and some reports are indicating the plane may have been stuck by a lightning bolt, despite its build to deflect such an event.
President Nicolas Sarkozy is "deeply concerned," according to his office, and several sources are saying that all hope is lost for flight 447.
Terrorism was said to be ruled out.
Update 1: Officials on the ground and in the air have not found any trace of the Air France Flight 447 plane and the outcome looks grim. No sign of the plane has yet been found.
The Airbus 330-200 has never had any fatalities in its sever-decade run - a statistic that officials say will likely change.
Also, Fox is reporting that there has not been any confirmation as to whether or not there are any Americans on the missing plane - but they have confirmed that several nationalities boarded the flight.
Update 2: It has been confirmed that at least two US citizens were onboard the missing airbus 330. There is still no sign of the plane or its possible remnants as of late Monday afternoon.
Update 3: Officials have found metal debris off the coast of Brazil where Flight 447 is believed to have gone down - and they believe the debris may be part of the Airbus 330.
Authorities have not officially confirmed whether the debris belongs to the plane.
Update 4: A fellow pilot who has flown the Airbus 330-200 has spoken out about reports of the airplane being struck by lightning to Fox News - and he says storms are monitored by a radar that allows pilots to re-route before reaching the storm. He also says that a plane being struck by lightning is quite common - but that it is unlikely the experienced pilot on Flight 447 flew into powerful storms.
So what does that leave us with? Fox asked the pilot if a bomb could have been onboard - and he responded with an answer no one wants to hear - yes.
While there are no "indications" of terrorism regarding Flight 447, it still remains a mystery how the aircraft and all its passenger just 'disappeared'.
Update 5: From the Huffington Post: On May 27, Argentina's Momento 24 reported that the Air France airline had received a bomb threat over the phone. Police and firemen inspected the plane but found nothing.
"The routine procedure lasted approximately one hour and a half and, as sources [sic] of the airport reported all the passengers are ok and they were not evacuated," it was reported.
Now reports claim that we may never know what happened to flight 447, which is believed to have disintegrated while in the air or immediately after hitting the Atlantic.
